This past Tuesday, we made a trip (about forty-five minutes) to Berry Patch Farms in Brighton, CO. It is a pick your own, organic farm and such fun! You can pick as much as you want (price is per pound) and it is recommended that you eat as much as you can while you pick – so yummy and not weighed! :) We visited BPF last year, along with our friends, the Parsons’, and Lillian was not so sure about the picking. She was sure about the eating of berries! This year, she made a pretty good little picker! And eater, as you can see here by the red juice smeared on her face. Clayton was not so helpful, but he walked in circles with his little green box and was a good sport.

After all the strawberry picking, and three potty breaks (a major feat for our little guy, but a major pain for a mama as we had to get on the “hay ride” shuttle back to the barn from the field each time – ugh!), I wanted to try to tackle the raspberry patch – but Clayton evidentally had enough of all this sun and fresh air and field work! We took a few steps towards the raspberries, and then decided it was time to leave.
Berry Patch Farms also have flowers you can cut yourself, carrots and several other things that I can’t recall right now for picking. In addition, they have the cutest little barn store in which you can purchase even more organic veggies. I picked up some green beans, tomatillos, cucumber (for daddy, since our garden gave him bitter ones) and juice boxes for the ride home! I made some experimental salsa verde (a little too sweet, but I’m still hoping to fix it up with another jalopeno pepper.
With all the strawberries, we had 2 days worth of shortcake, 3 large jars of (experimental) jam, 1 cookie sheet full of frozen berries for smoothies and a tub of homemade strawberry ice cream! Yum! I had dreams of sour cream and strawberry muffins, too, but they didn’t make the cut – I was WAY too exhausted! The jam was experimental because I was trying to use agave as sweetner. It turned out ok, but could have used twice as much agave! I also could not find the sugar free sure-jel, so I used the regular variety and it didn’t set up well. We have been using it on the kids pb&j’s, with a little honey added and they seem to be ok with that. I have also discovered that it makes a good addition to smoothies – already extra sweet!
We can’t wait to go back!
